Your first payroll: what a new Kansas employer files

Hiring your first employee means registering with four agencies before the first paycheck. Here’s the checklist.

The first paycheck is the easy part. Before it goes out, a new employer in Kansas needs a handful of registrations and forms in place.

Before the first paycheck

  • An Employer Identification Number from the IRS
  • A Kansas withholding tax account with the Department of Revenue
  • A Kansas unemployment insurance account
  • Forms W-4 and I-9 from each employee
  • A new hire report to the Kansas New Hire Directory within 20 days
